New NEC biometrics and analytics service planned for July North America launch

NEC is launching a biometrics and image analysis service for large-scale facilities such as airports and sports stadiums to North America in July, Japan’s Jiji Press reports.

The new service utilizes NEC’s existing biometric identification technology, and is part of the company’s expansion plan, which aims to increase the business related to biometrics and image analytics services to 100 billion yen by fiscal 2021 through expansion into Europe and Southeast Asia.

A representative of the company confirmed to Biometric Update in an email that it plans to follow the North American launch with a roll-out in Japan before the end of the year, but notes that the service is not part of the system it will use for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. NEC’s facial recognition is the only technology being deployed for access control during the games.

NEC Senior Vice President Toshifumi Yoshizaki expressed confidence that the system will be widely used, saying, “the possibilities are endless,” according to the Jiji Press.

Frost & Sullivan named NEC the 2019 Asia Pacific Biometrics Company of the Year in May, and the company recently joined with a local partner to provide its AFIS for Kerala State Police in India.
