Netflix's Upcoming Selena Mini-Series Casts Christian Serratos

Netflix has finally found its Selena.

According to Vulture, 28-year-old actress Christian Serratos has been selected to play Tejano music legend Selena Quintanilla-Perez in the upcoming series set to depict the Latinx icon’s life. Christian has previously played minor roles in The Walking Dead, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, and The Twilight Saga.

Netflix has yet to comment on the details of Christian’s casting, but it is known that the series “will follow the choices the young music and fashion icon and her family made to build her career,” wrote Vulture.

The upcoming show, simply titled Selena: The Series, will tell the story of the young Mexican-American singer whose life was cut short when she was shot and murdered by her manager Yolanda Saldivar in 1995. Since her untimely death 24 years ago, Selena’s music has transcended her stardom from her beginnings as a burgeoning Tejano singer to a full-blown Latinx cultural figure. The previous feature biopic made about the singer, 1997’s Selena — starred a then relatively unknown Jennifer Lopez— and helped take Selena’s musical legacy and cultural relevance to another level while also kicking off the start of an international film and music career for Lopez.

In recent years, there’s been a MAC makeup collection dedicated to Selena's glam style and even a music festival in Corpus Christi, Texas — Selena’s hometown — attended by thousands each year.

While Christian has played minor roles in her previous film and television work, her casting as Selena is sure to have all eyes on her, with longtime fans eagerly awaiting the show’s premiere. If anything, Christian’s own stardom is surely set to rise as well.

Selena: The Series is set to begin production in Mexico next month with Selena’ father, sister and family attorney on board as executive producers.
