Smith Village Resident Tests Positive For Coronavirus

CHICAGO — A resident of the Smith Village senior living community in Morgan Park has tested positive for the new coronavirus. Officials at the senior living community said they received word on Sunday of the resident's positive test.

The resident, who lives in the skilled nursing care wing, began exhibiting one of the symptoms related to the new coronavirus on Thursday, a Smith Village spokeswoman said. The resident was tested immediately and results came back on Sunday, she said.

The resident was isolated on Thursday and remains in stable condition, according to a statement from the retirement community at 2320 W. 113th Place.

"This is the only incidence of COVID-19 at Smith Village,” Marti Jatis, executive director of the not-for-profit continuing care retirement community, said.

“Smith Village’s wide range of protocols and practices regarding COVID-19 meet guidelines issued by the Chicago and Illinois Departments of Public Health, the Centers for Disease and Prevention Control, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid,” Jatis said.

Jatis said all Smith Village employees, and anyone else entering the buildings, are screened when they arrive and all staff members are now required to wear universal masks.

“And, we continue to adhere to our stringent visitation limitations,” Jatis said. “Our staff, residents and their families remained committed to complying with all recommendations. We are grateful for their support.”

Statewide, Illinois had more than 12,000 cases and more than 300 deaths reported as of April 6.
