It was a battle of talons versus tentacles on northern Vancouver Island this week.
On Mowi Canada West’s youtube channel, a video is making waves showing workers of its Mahatta West fish farm in Quatsino rescuing an eagle, that had been in the death grip of an Octopus Monday afternoon.
The workers say they suddenly heard a lot of screeching and splashing sounds and discovered a bald eagle wrapped up by the octopus.
The farm staff used a pole to pry the octopus off the eagle, which swam to shore, recovering on a branch for about 10 minutes before eventually flying away.
The octopus dove back under the water and both animals appeared unharmed.
The workers didn’t see how the eagle ended up in its predicament but guessed the bird tried to pluck the octopus out of the water before the raptor realized it had “bitten off more than it could chew”, according to the youtube post.
“(Staff) are used to seeing the wonders of nature around them on a regular basis, but they knew that this was a once in a lifetime experience,” Mowi said.
