Birmingham is set to sizzle in soaring temperatures this Bank Holiday weekend - but Christmas is already being celebrated at one Holiday Inn hotel.

Guests checking in to the Birmingham Airport hotel are being welcomed by an artificial Christmas tree complete with festively-wrapped presents underneath and a red Father Christmas hat jauntily perched on top.

The display is complete with a handful of blue cards proclaiming 'Winter Wonderland' and a scattering of multi-coloured baubles.

Ewelina Tomiszczak is the Commercial Director at Holiday Inn Birmingham Airport .

She said: "At the Holiday Inn Birmingham Airport NEC, Christmas is the most magical time of the year therefore we are aiming to bring this delightful spirit to the hotel all year round.

"The Christmas tree is a symbol of celebration of the hearty holiday that unites us all together.

"We pride ourselves on making the festive season perfect in every way with stylish décor and the warmest welcome. Our mission is to bring a smile, togetherness and desire to create a perfect moment where great wishes come true every day."

But some Twitter users mocked the initiative.

One posted: "No way - are you sure the lazy brummies just haven’t got around to taking last years down."

Another said: " We are still in August for God’s sake!!"

Another exclaimed: "This should be a criminal offence before December 1st."

And one user advocated this: " I'd protest.. knock it over then run away!"

However the popular hotel, which boasts a Marco Pierre White New York Italian restaurant, is not the first in Britain to erect a festive tree.

That accolade belongs to the Air Balloon pub in Bristol.

It put up a five-foot artificial tree, complete with sparkling gold, blue and silver baubles, in July as the UK baked in 37 degree heat.

Staff also put up a sign reading ' Have yourself a merry little Christmas ' while an added touch was a set of flashing lights.

The Met Office has predicted record temperatures in the UK for the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend with temperatures likely to reach 33C on Monday.

But Brummies will have to settle for highs of 27C over the three-day weekend, with 27C on Saturday and 26C on Sunday.
