Wolcott Keeper's House to open July 10

MARBLEHEAD - The Wolcott Keeper’s House, 9999 Bayshore Road, will celebrate a delayed but festive start to its 2021 season on July 10.

The Port Clinton Rotary Club Perch Wagon will be on site to offer sandwiches and sides, and the Ottawa County Historical Society's History Speaks group will entertain with authentic stories of local heritage.

The House, home of the Danbury Peninsula’s first lighthouse keeper, Benajah Wolcott, will be open for docent-led tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 10 as will the adjacent museum and gift shop, and the Wolcott family cemetery.

The Keeper’s House schedule for the rest of the season will be 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays. The first open Thursday will be July 15, and the last Saturday will be Aug. 28.The Keeper’s House is  2½ miles southwest of the Marblehead Lighthouse on Bayshore Road.

The annual Civil War Encampment with members of the Ohio 14th Volunteer Infantry, and performance by the 73rd OVI Regiment Band will return on Oct. 9, as part of the Peninsula-wide Lighthouse Festival.

Chamber foundation, safety council name scholarship recipients

FREMONT - The Sandusky County Chamber Foundation and Safety Council are proud to announce the winners of their 2021 scholarships.

The 2021 Chamber Foundation Scholarship is being awarded to Isabelle Howerton of Clyde High School. Howerton has been involved in concert band, marching band, pep band, a cappella choir, student council, Key Club and more. She is also a company member of the Fremont Ballet School, active member of the Fremont Church of the Nazarene, and volunteers at Quartermania and the Alexa Brown 5K. Howerton plans to attend the University of Akron in the fall.

The 2021 Safety Council Scholarship is being awarded to Merrick Hirt of St. Joseph Central Catholic in Fremont. Hirt has been active in sports and student council. He has been named Rotary Student of the Month, is a National Honor Society member and has been awarded nine athletic letters. Hirt was named Teammate of the Year in basketball and Sandusky Bay Conference All League Honorable Mention in football. He plans to attend either Kent State University or the University of Dayton and will be studying chemistry and biology.

Ed Gabel inducted into PCHS Alumni Hall of Fame

PORT CLINTON - Edward M. Gabel joined the elite group of Port Clinton High School alumni recognized for their outstanding achievement and contributions in their field. The induction took place during the Rotary Honors Banquet at PCHS on May 5. 

Gabel is a 1982 PCHS graduate. After high school, Gabel went to Miami University in Oxford, earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1986.

He then began a career as a staff artist for the Asbury Park Press and the Toledo Blade. In 1997 his illustrations for the Asbury Park Press won awards from the Society of Newspaper Design, attracting the attention of Time magazine, which offered EGabel a position at their Rockefeller Center headquarters in New York City.

At Time, Gabel’s work reached national and international audiences. He won awards from the Society of Publication Designers and the Best in Show award at Malofiej, an international competition for information graphics held in Spain. As Time’s Associate Graphics Director, Gabel also illustrated many of the magazine’s full-spread graphics, including the Sept. 11, 2001 special edition of Time.

Gabel left Time after 10 years to become Vice President at Joe Zeff Design, a design studio run by Time’s former Graphics Director.

In addition to magazine covers for Time, ESPN, Rolling Stone, and even Time rival Newsweek, Gabel created artwork for corporations, universities and entertainment companies. He created the album artwork for “Watch the Throne,” the platinum-selling album of Jay-Z and Kanye West; the marquee artwork for “Sister Act,” a Broadway play; and many of the  highly publicized apps to first appear on the iPad.
