Christopher Winter, MD, of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, and author of the book, The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep is Broken and How to Fix It, tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
There are a lot of toppers on the market, and it can be tough to know where to start. “The multitude of options can be overwhelming, but most people tend to prefer a medium-firm option,” Harrison A. Linder, MD, a pain management specialist with The Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Md., tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “They tend to be firm enough to offer support for back and front sleepers, but still offer some cushion for those that prefer to sleep on their sides.”
Overall, it’s “extremely important” to find a topper that fits your body, “because if you have an uncomfortable one, you’re going to end up with discomfort during the day,” Medhat Mikhael, MD, a pain management specialist and medical director of the non-operative program at the Spine Health Center at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., tells Yahoo Lifestyle. He’s a big fan of memory foam options, which tend to adjust well to the shape of your body and also have proper ventilation.
