FREMONT, Calif., 15 Feb. 2008. Integrated optics manufacturer Gemfire Corp. in Fremont, Calif., is boosting its ability to integrate active and passive wafer-scale architectures with its acquisition of Covega Corp. in Jessup, Md.

Covega, which will become a wholly owned subsidiary and the active component division of Gemfire's planar light circuit (PLC) products, makes indium-phosphide and lithium niobate components and modules for military, aerospace, telecommunications, industrial, medical, and test applications.

Gemfire makes PhotonIC planar integrated optics based on wafer-scale integration using silica, silicon, polymers, lithium niobate, and semiconductor materials. These integrated optics go into high-performance optical networks for military and telecommunications applications. The company makes laser, waveguide, switching, and manufacturing technology.

Products from the Covega facility include superluminescent light-emitting diodes (SLEDs), Fabry-Perot lasers, tunable laser gain chips, semiconductor optical amplifiers, and lithium niobate modulators.

"Through integration of more optical functions into PLCs, it is possible to provide better performance and cost-effective solutions to meet the needs of large system integrators under pressure to deliver solutions capable of supporting the rapid growth in demand for bandwidth," says Richard Tompane, Gemfire's president and chief executive officer.
