Gov. Kristi Noem gives an update on back to school planning on Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at John Harris Elementary School in Sioux Falls.

South Dakota public and private schools will get an additional $500 per student thanks to new funding from the Coronavirus Relief Fund, Gov. Kristi Noem's office announced Wednesday.

The additional $75 million comes after new guidance from the U.S. Department of Treasury as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, a press release from Noem's office states.

That guidance also means tribal governments can make similar payments to tribal and Bureau of Indian Education schools.

Noem:$47 million going to SD schools to help them re-open safely this fall

“I appreciate the great work our schools are doing to ensure kids are back in the classroom this fall,” Noem stated in the release. “We expect this additional funding will help schools continue to tackle challenges related to COVID-19. It’s crucial that our students are in the classroom this year, and we are grateful to the Trump administration for giving us the flexibility to help make that happen.”

The CARES Act has provided South Dakota with $1.25 billion in funding, and the $75 million for schools will come out of that amount, the release state.
