The beautiful 80-foot stone arch bridge was part of the old National Road. When constructed in 1813, it was the largest of its kind in the world.

Deep Creek Lake State Park fronts on a 6-square-mile, man-made lake. Water sports of all kinds are popular, and in the winter the park offers six miles of snowmobile trails.

Directions: In Garrett County, 10 miles northeast of Oakland, on the east side of Deep Creek Lake, 2 miles east of Thayerville, off U.S. Route 219.

Garrett State Forest

Located in the middle of Garrett State Forest, Herrington Manor State Park featues a 53-acre lake and many wooded trails. In the winter months, the park offers cross-country ski trails along with ski rentals. Twenty log cabins are available to rent.

New Germany State Park is built on the site of a once-prosperous milling center in Savage River State Forest, and features a 13-acre lake and eleven rental cabins. Trails for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter lead through typical Western Maryland forest lands.

Savage River State Forest

Savage River State Forest is a strategic watershed surrounding the Savage River Reservoir. This forest is classified as a northern hardwood forest. About 2,700 acres of the forest have been designated as the Big Savage Wildland.

Directions: In central and eastern Garrett County, generally south of U.S. Route 40.

Swallow Falls State Park

This mountain park contains some of Maryland's most breathtaking scenery. The Youghiogheny River flows along the the park's borders, passing through shaded rocky gorges and creating rippling rapids. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 63-foot waterfall—a spectacular sight. Tall hemlocks dominate the silent woods.
