‘I AM’ to feature Bahraini women

ManamaSeven female Bahraini artists, allied with the “Bahrain Art Across Borders” (BAAB) initiative, will participate in an international touring exhibition titled “I AM”.

The exhibition, organised by an NGO called Caravan and supported by Tamkeen, comprises 30 of the Middle East’s premier contemporary women artists.

It will be held at National Gallery of Fine Arts in the Jordanian capital of Amman from May 2 to June 22, 2017.

Later, it will be exhibited at St Martin-in-the-Fields on Trafalgar Square, UK, from July 1 to August 31, 2017 and continue in North America from September 2017 until December 2018.

“I AM” aims to celebrate the rich, diverse and pivotal contribution made by Middle Eastern women to the enduring global quest for harmony and peace. It is being curated by ArtBAB’s Head of Development Janet Rady.

The Bahraini female artists participating in “I AM” include Amina Al Abbasi, Ghada Khunji, Mariam Ali Fakhro, Marwa Al Khalifa, Mayasa Al Sowaidi, Nabeela Al Khayer and Taiba Faraj. Each artist will show two or three-dimensional work in a variety of media: painting, drawing, collage, photography, digital art, mixed media and sculpture.

They have previously exhibited at BAAB, which was launched at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in May 2016. The initiative was curated by Janet Rady, who is developing the ArtBAB programme, with support from BAAB’s education advisor, Dr Aissa Deebi.

The artists’ work strongly displayed an overwhelming sense of belonging to Bahrain from Mariam Fakhro’s work recalling her family home in Muharraq to Marwa Al Khalifa’s images portraying their connection with water and the sea. Taiba Faraj, Amina Al Abbasi and Ghada Khunji displayed a deep sense of compassion and
spirituality through their calligraphy, paintings and photographs. Nabeela Al Khayer chose a figurative path for her work whereas Mayasa Al Sowaidi, took to literal elements like  recycled tea bags, to evoke their Bahraini customs.

BAAB is supported by Tamkeen, Bahrain’s economic development fund, which seeks to grow new and existing individuals and enterprises.  BAAB’s success led to ArtBAB which is scheduled for 22nd to 26th March 2017.
