Huskies Take Back The Cup; Beat Seattle 3-0

SEATTLE --- Dylan Teves had a goal and two assists while Lucas Meek recorded his team-best third goal of the season as No. 8 Washington took home the WAC/101 Club Cup Trophy with a 3-0 victory over rival Seattle U in the 2019 Seattle Derby Sunday night at Championship Field.

The Huskies snap a two-match losing streak to the Redhawks while improving to 5-1-0 on the season. The loss drops Seattle U to 2-2-2 overall. Washington improves to 45-8-5 overall against its cross-town rival all-time and 9-3-1 against Seattle U since the Redhawks returned to NCAA Division I in 2009.

The WAC/101 Club Cup is awarded by the Washington Athletic Club to the winner of the Seattle Derby. Washington has now won the cup three of the four times it has been battled for. Teves earned WAC/101 Club MVP honors after having a part in all three UW goals.

"Huge thanks to the 101 club for continuing to support this game," said UW Head Coach Jamie Clark. "It's a match between two of the best teams in the country and become a fantastic soccer community event.

"Credit to our guys on learning from our midweek setback," said Clark. "We were given the opportunity to learn and grow and we did just that. Seattle University is a great team and it took a special performance to walk away from their field with that result."

Meek continued his scoring prowess, tallying his third goal in the last four matches, despite playing in just 53 minutes this season. Meanwhile, Teves continues to rack up the points with his tally tonight giving him a goal and five assists on the season for a team-high seven points.

The duo teamed up for Washington's first goal of the match as Meek headed home a cross from Teves right in front of the net in the 12th minute. Teves took an initial shot from outside the box, but saw it blocked and ricochet over to the left side of the goal. He quickly gathered the loose ball and sent a long pass to the right side of the net where Meek headed it home.

The goal was Meek's third goal in UW's last four matches and gives him the team lead in goals with three on the season. It was also the first goal Seattle U has surrendered at home on the season.

Teves added to the Huskies' lead with a great goal in the 29th minute. The sophomore dribbled the ball through a pair of defenders from the left side to the middle of the field where he cracked a shot through traffic from just outside the box. It took a bit of a deflection of a Seattle U defender which caught the keeper flatfooted as it found the upper left corner.

It was Teves' first goal of the year to go along with four assists.

Teves was once again involved in the Huskies' third goal just over three minutes into the second half. He drove down the left side and sent a pass ahead to Blake Bodily. The junior then took a touch and slid the ball across the goal mouth where Jaret Townsend finished into the open net. It was Townsend's second goal of the season.

Freshman Sam Fowler made the start in goal for the Huskies, making one save and earning his second cleansheet in as many matches this season.

The Huskies held Seattle to just eight shots while recording 13 of their own. On the season, Washington has not allowed more than 11 shots in match, holding three teams to fewer than 10 shots. Overall, UW is 14-1-1 over the last two years when holding opponents to single-digit shot attempts.

Next up for the Washington is its Pac-12 Conference opener as the Huskies host San Diego State on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
