Medical helicopters crashes in New Mexico

Updated

NEWKIRK, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a medical helicopter has crashed in eastern New Mexico.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the helicopter disappeared from radar early Thursday morning and went down near Newkirk around 20 miles east of Santa Rosa. Ranch workers found the wreckage after they were asked to look around.

The conditions of the three people on board are not known, but ranch manager Phil Bidegain (BIHD'-a-gehn) says he saw no survivors when he and another ranch employee found the burning wreckage on the rocky northern side of a mesa.

FAA authorities say the cause of the crash is unknown.

Officials say the CareFirst flight was out of Santa Fe and was scheduled to pick up a patient in Tucumcari (too-KUHM'-kehr-ee).
