A low-speed chase took place in New Zealand between police and a man who was speeding down a sidewalk on his mobility scooter.

The viral video shows Charlie Durham, a double amputee, fleeing on a mobility scooter as police in a car attempted to pull him over for speeding in the New Zealand town of Timaru.

The video of the chase was recorded by New Zealand resident Aleisha Candy Wednesday evening, who called it the “funniest thing I have seen in a long time" in a Facebook post.

Candy is heard with her son responding to the video, exclaiming "Go old man, go!"

The chase concluded after Durham was stuck in a driveway, blocked by the police car.

Why did he speed away from the police?

Durham told Newshub that was afraid of being thrown off from his chair into the cop car. He added to TVNZ that he wanted to rush home to prepare his evening tea.

“Ultimately the safe use of the mobility scooter by the rider was the aim of the officer," said a statement from New Zealand police, according to the Guardian.

"Throughout the incident, the officer continued to assess risk to reduce any hazard risk to ask road users.”

Durham was slapped with two tickets — one for failing to pull over and one for inconsiderate operation of a mobile scooter — and a fine of just under $160, reported the Guardian.
