NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A child died after drowning in a small pond at an Antioch apartment complex Monday morning.

Crews responded a little after 10 a.m. to the Preakness Apartments on Bell Road, where first responders pulled the child from the water.

Metro police said 20-month-old Joan Torres was taken to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives determined Joan’s death was a “tragic accident” and said the boy’s sister had likely opened the apartment door while their aunt was in another room. An apartment resident called police just after 10 a.m. to report a young girl near the pond screaming and crying.

When first responders learned Joan was in the water, they went in to try to rescue him. He was carried to shore and transported to the hospital, but did not survive, investigators said.
