ENTERPRISE, Ala. (WDHN) — Eugene and Charlene Goolsby along with more than two dozen volunteers refurbished a habitat home that had been damaged in a storm this month.

The couple owns a plumbing company, and Eugene sits on the Enterprise City Council. In the last two decades, he has been involved in helping build affordable housing for more than two dozen low-income families.

“Lots of satisfaction being able to help build a home for a family that normally wouldn’t be able to afford such a home,” he said. “It’s not free, we hold a low-interest loan and it’s lower than rent.”

Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Roselyn, helped establish Habitat for Humanity shortly after leaving the white house in the early-1980’s. The future homeowner provides “sweat equity” by helping in the construction.

They also pay a low-interest mortgage. Long-time volunteers say it’s a wonderful feeling to see a deserving family receive their first-ever home.

“I am retired military, and this gives me the opportunity to those folks who need help,” Hector Cardona said.

Charlene helped provide a home for a family that lives in sub-standard housing. She considered it a blessing, and an amazing gift from God.

“We have been in business here for 40 years we have been fortunate to be able to donate to habitat,” Charlene said.

The Goolsby’s along with those volunteers give their time and efforts building homes for those who never would be able to own a piece of the American dream.
