MONROE, MI - A man is missing in Lake Erie after a boat he was in took on water and then flipped on Sunday morning.
Emergency responders were called to the scene in Bolles Harbor about 7:45 a.m. on Sunday when one of the two victims in the incident called 911 before the boat capsized, the Detroit Free Press reports. A 28-year-old Monroe man was rescued and had non-life-threatening injuries. A 51-year-old Taylor man is still missing.
Facing “extremely rough conditions,” crews found the 16-foot fishing boat about a mile offshore; it was upside down and tangled in a fishing net, police said. The 28-year-old man was clinging to it.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and boat assisted in the search Sunday to find the 51-year-old.
Police have not released the names of the victims, the report said.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, City of Monroe Fire Department, Monroe Township Fire Department, LaSalle Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance assisted at the scene.
Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-240-7530.
