Maryland Lighthouse Challenge Set For Sept. 21-22

The 2019 Maryland Lighthouse Challenge Sept. 21-22 showcases the beauty of the state's lighthouses and the fascinating stories behind them.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — They're unique, stoic and have a story to tell. The lighthouses of Maryland harbor secrets, mystery and history that people can delve into during the 2019 Maryland Lighthouse Challenge. These historic structures can be found at some of the most beautiful locations in the state.

As part of the lighthouse challenge, participants who visit the 10 lighthouses identified on a map will receive a complimentary souvenir at each one. Stop by an 11th lighthouse as a challenge and be gifted with a "special" souvenir announcing that "you've seen the lights." There also are two additional bonus lighthouses and a lighthouse cruise to enjoy.

During the weekend of Sept. 21-22 in partnership with lighthouse organizations across the state, volunteers of the Chesapeake Chapter will help out at participating lighthouses from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to coordinate the lighthouse challenge.

Karen Rosage with the Chesapeake Chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society said that one of the group's missions is to educate, inform and entertain those interested in these lighthouses.

"Lighthouses are an important aspect of our state’s maritime heritage and remain treasured keepsakes of a bygone era. Participants will find these magnificent structures and the history surrounding them water’s edge at some of the most scenic destinations statewide," Rosage told Patch.

The biennial event draws numerous crowds from across the country, Rosage noted.

"In 2017, we had 5,342 lighthouse visitations statewide and during each challenge, we welcome participants not only from Maryland, but from all over the United States. During one event we had 27 states represented," she told Patch. "People love the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge. It’s a fun and educational event. The Chesapeake Bay area lighthouses are very diverse. People love visiting the lighthouses for their history, their varied architectural styles and the beautiful photographic opportunities they present."

  • Drum Point, Solomons
  • Fort Washington Lighthouse, Fort Washington
  • Hooper Strait, St. Michaels
  • Piney Point Lighthouse, Piney Point
  • Point Lookout, Lexington Park
  • Sandy Point Shoal, Annapolis
  • Seven Foot Knoll, Baltimore
  • USCG Lightship Chesapeake, Baltimore
