Hills Rotary Club starting new year of helping

When members of the Anaheim Hills Rotary Club met at Yves’ Bistro recently, it was not only a celebration of a new club year and a new president, but also the culmination of many contributions made this past year.

Members honored outgoing president Jonelle Strickland for her leadership and welcomed Stacey Giannoulis, who takes over the reigns this month.

Anaheim Hills Rotary was one of eight clubs out of 46 to receive a District Award for service to the community. Among its service projects for the year were: sponsorship of the “Every 15 Minutes,” a simulated accident teaching teens dangers of drunk driving held on the Canyon High School campus; collecting more than 1,300 pounds of food donations in front of Ralph’s grocery store on Weir Canyon for the food bank; and providing funds and volunteers to help underprivileged kids in a back-to-school shopping spree.

The nonprofit group served dinner on a monthly basis to families at the Ronald McDonald House in Orange; prepared and served Thanksgiving dinner for seniors at Anaheim’s Tyrol Plaza; barbecued lunch for about 200 volunteers and kids for the TOPS Soccer annual cookout; and financed almost $10,000 in classroom grants to various local schools, as well as The Blind Children’s Learning Center.

Members also stuffed and provided more than 7,000 plastic eggs for the annual Easter Egg Hunt for children in the community; sponsored a WWII veteran so he could participate in the Honor Flight Program and visit the Washington D.C. monuments; provided financial support for the Concerts in the Canyon; and collected more than 200 purses and various sundries for Joanie’s Purse Project which were donated to women in shelters and transition homes for Mother’s Day.

“All of the projects we participated in were done while having fun, socializing and even (doing) some business networking,” Strickland said.

The Anaheim Hills Rotary club meets for dinner on Thursday evenings at the Anaheim Hills Golf Course. Membership is open to business owners and managers, as well as community leaders interested in networking and giving back to the community.
