Military families and troops could soon see Petco stores on their local base thanks to a new partnership between the nationwide pet supply chain and the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES).

Petco will open its first store at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, in the spring, AAFES officials announced in an Oct. 29 news release.

The stores will offer grooming, pet supplies, food and toys, officials said in the release. Unlike off-base Petco locations that also sell small animals, including fish and lizards, those on base will not sell pets, officials told Military.com.

Petco offers military shoppers a 10 percent discount off base. The stores on base will automatically give that discount at the register, officials told Military.com. On-base Petcos will still charge state or other local taxes, just like their off-base counterparts, they added.

As for other duty stations that will host the stores, AAFES officials said the options are under review.

"Exchange is currently reviewing other potential sites for Petcos, but there are no new locations to report at this time," Chris Ward, an AAFES spokesman, said in an email.
