Lion Frank Adkins introduced Dr. Carey Dozier as speaker for the Signal Mountain Lions Club meeting.

"Cataracts Home and Abroad" was the topic for Dr. Carey Dozier of the East Ridge Eye Center, in his message to the Signal Mountain Lions Club. He illoustrated his remarks with pictures from Nepal.

The "abroad" came from a medical mission trip Dr. Dozier made to Nepal with other doctors to treat eye diseases. One of the clinics the doctors worked in was in a monastery where in two and a half days they performed over 400 surgeries.

They had to bring in all of their equipment and move it around as they worked. As a result, the type of surgery was more like surgery in the United States 20 to 30 years ago. Treatment for cataracts has come a long way in the past few years, Dr. Dozier said, with ultrasound and laser.

There are hundreds of different types of symptoms for cataracts, including hazy vision, glare with bright lights and dull colors. There is usually no pain, red eyes or scratching and eye surgery is not painful.
