Another 57 Massachusetts residents are reported to have died from coronavirus, bringing the statewide death toll to 6,473, according to state health officials.
Of the 6,473 deaths, 3,924 are being reported out of long-term care facilities.
Officials also confirmed another 422 positive tests, for a total of now 93,693 confirmed cases of COVID-19. That’s based on 4,920 new tests reported on Tuesday, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
To date, 545,481 coronavirus tests have been carried out.
Gov. Charlie Baker on Tuesday said that, as the state embarks on a cautious and data-driven phased reopening, the public health coronavirus data has been “trending in the right direction.”
“The progress that we’ve made has only been made possible by everyone’s willingness to do their part,” Baker said.
Baker said the rate of positive tests has on average declined to about 9%, which is where it has stood for roughly a week, and 2,179 are currently hospitalized with COVID-19.
“This represents a significant decrease over the course of the past two or three weeks,” Baker said.
The latest figures come roughly a week after Baker unveiled plans for the first of four phases in his administration’s plan to reopen the economy, and a day after public beaches were allowed to reopen.
Officials also said on Tuesday that Massachusetts has made it beyond the so-called surge, despite concerns about a ‘second wave’ of infections as restrictions begin to lift.
“We’ve talked a lot about preparing for and dealing with the surge, which is now something that, thanks to a lot of work by a lot of people, is behind us," Baker said. "And as a result of that many of the field hospitals that we set up around the state to add beds and reduce strain on hospitals have begun to close.”
