Back to the Future writer responds to Marty McFly fan theory
Back to the Future is celebrating its 35th birthday, with fans reminiscing about the adventures of Michael J Fox's Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd's Doc Brown. The cast recently reunited, and there's a new board game and a Transformers figure to buy.
One thing that fans have love to debate for almost as long as the film has been out (or since the dawn of YouTube anyway) is whether actor Eric Stoltz actually appears in the film.
For context, Stoltz was originally cast as Marty and filmed a few scenes, before the role was recast and history was made. Some people think that the very quick shot of Marty punching Biff Tannen actually features Stoltz's fist.
To get to the bottom of this, The Hollywood Reporter tracked down screenwriter Bob Gale and asked him to find out what he could.
Reporting his findings, he said: "Editor Harry Keramidas who cut the scene pulled his notes, which show that the punch was reshot, but the printed takes were labelled 'OK' as opposed to 'Good'.
"So that could still be Eric's fist. I think the only way we would know for sure is to check the actual edge numbers on the negative, but no-one will risk damaging the negative by doing that.
"The workprint edge numbers might reveal the truth, but no idea if that even exists."
This could be the closest we get to a definitive answer for a while, so maybe it's best to just believe what you like.
Across the last few months, Bob Gale has spoken out against a censored version of the film that was uploaded to Netflix, and said there will never be another movie in the franchise.
