Platte-Geddes volleyball takes SESD Tournament title behind dominant showing

Nine area programs collided at the late-season conference tournament hosted by Wagner.

WAGNER — Platte-Geddes did not drop a set across four best-of-three set matches to claim the Southeast South Dakota Conference Tournament title on Saturday. Set scores were 25-10 and 25-15 against Chamberlain, 28-26 and 25-17 against Parkston, 25-18 and 25-15 against Mount Vernon/Plankinton and 25-23 and 25-18 against Burke.

The Black Panthers (27-4) were led by all-tournament team honorees Avery DeVries, Cadence Van Zee and Karly VanDerWerff. For the tournament, DeVries totaled 89 assists, 22 digs, three ace serves and one block. Van Zee powered her way to a team-high 37 kills to go with 37 digs and three aces, as VanDerWerff added 33 kills, 46 digs, eight aces and one block.

The trio saved its best game for last, as DeVries posted her tournament-high in assists with 27, Van Zee recorded her most kills with 12 and VanDerWerff had 14 digs in the victory over Burke.

The Black Panthers host Winner on Oct. 25 and travel to Ethan on Oct. 26.

MVP's lone loss of the competition was to P-G, as the Titans (19-6) swept Burke (25-7), Gregory (14-11) and tournament host Wagner (23-6). The results helped MVP surpass Wagner for the top spot in current Region 5A standings. The Titans are at Sanborn Central/Woonsocket on Oct. 26.

Burke, Wagner and Parkston (18-14) each went 2-2 at the tournament.
