Life sure is a beach, sometimes.
A French couple is in hot water after allegedly being caught with 90 pounds of sand they took as a “souvenir” from a beach on the Italian island of Sardinia.
According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the couple poured the sand from a beach in Chia into 14 plastic bottles and loaded them into the trunk of their SUV.
However, the couple was caught on a ferry while en route back to France.
Unfortunately for them, it’s illegal to take things like sand, pebbles and shells from Sardinia’s beaches.
Beach thieves like to sell the sand on online auction sites, authorities said.
“Sandy beaches are one of the main attractions of Sardinia,” a local environmental scientist told the BBC. “There are two threats: one is due to erosion, which is partly natural and partly induced by the increasing sea level due to climate change; the second is sand stealing by tourists.”
The couple faces fines and up to six years in prison, making this one vacation they’re certain to never forget.
