Seattle Police: Man Officers Killed Was Double Shooting Suspect

A man shot and killed by police near Jimi Hendrix Park Tuesday night was suspected of shooting two other people, police said.

SEATTLE β€” Seattle police shot and killed a man near Jimi Hendrix Park Tuesday night after responding to 911 calls reporting a man in the area firing several gunshots, officials said early Wednesday. According to the Seattle Police Department, two people were shot before police arrived, including one victim who died and another person hospitalized with critical injuries.

Police said the first 911 call came in around 9:16 p.m., and responding officers heard multiple gunshots in the area. According to investigators, the suspect approached them and began shooting, and the officers returned fire. Seattle Fire Department medics declared the man dead shortly after arriving on the scene.

In a news release, SPD said two victims with gunshot wounds were found inside a vehicle parked in a lot on the 2300 block of South Massachusetts Street. One person died en route to the hospital, and the other is being treated for life-threatening injuries at Harborview Medical Center.

The department's Force Investigation Team will investigate the shooting, and SPD said members of the Office of Police Accountability and Office of Inspector General also responded to the scene. The police department said it would release footage of the shooting within 72 hours.
