Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker recalls an irate Donald Trump calling him after The Wall Street Journal published an article shortly before the 2016 election. Pecker’s testimony came in his third day on the stand in Trump’s hush money trial in New York. The Journal article broke the news of the Enquirer’s payment to Karen McDougal for her rights to a story claiming an affair with Trump. Pecker says Trump was upset because he thought Pecker had the story under control. Pecker testified that the Enquirer owner's response to the Journal that the company had “not paid people to kill damaging stories about Mr. Trump” was a lie.

Some U.S. universities called in police to break up demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war, resulting in ugly scuffles and dozens of new arrests. Other schools appeared content to wait out student protests Thursday, as the final days of the semester ticked down and graduation ceremonies loomed. Boston police say 108 people were arrested early Thursday at Emerson College and four officers suffered injuries at an encampment. Police peacefully arrested 93 pro-Palestinian student protesters at the University of Southern California Wednesday evening. The arrests came hours after police at a Texas university aggressively detained 34 demonstrators.

Arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court have ended after more than 2 1/2 hours in Donald Trump’s bid to avoid prosecution over his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden. The arguments had been scheduled to last for an hour Thursday but ran more than double the allotted time. The case delved deep into the nuances of immunity, and key questions of when the high court might rule remain unclear. The court usually releases its opinions by the end of June, and the timing of the ruling could be as important as the outcome.

The Supreme Court seems highly skeptical of former President Donald Trump’s claim of absolute immunity from prosecution. But it's possible Trump could still benefit from a lengthy trial delay, possibly beyond November’s election. Chief Justice John Roberts was among at least five members of the court Thursday who appeared likely to reject the claim of absolute immunity that would stop the prosecution of Trump on charges he conspired to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. But two justices suggested that lower courts might have to sort out the matter, possibly delaying the outcome until after the election.

The man who fatally shot retired NFL star Will Smith after a car crash in 2016 has received a 25-year prison sentence following his January conviction on a manslaughter charge. Thursday's hearing in New Orleans marked the second time 36-year-old Cardell Hayes had faced sentencing in the killing. He was convicted of manslaughter in December 2016 and later sentenced to 25 years. But the jury vote had been 10-2 and the conviction was later tossed after the Supreme Court outlawed such non-unanimous verdicts. He was freed on bond while awaiting his retrial but was locked away again after his second conviction in the death of the former New Orleans Saint.

A body believed to be that of a missing truck driver has been found in a northwest Iowa field not far from where his abandoned rig was discovered on an isolated highway just before Thanksgiving, but details of his death remain a mystery. The Iowa Department of Public Safety says someone in his field discovered a body Wednesday, near where 53-year-old David Schultz’s semi was found on Nov. 21. The DPS didn’t identify the body as that of Schultz and says in a news release that a forensic autopsy is planned. But Schultz’s wife, Sarah, told reporters on Thursday that the person found was wearing boots that matched her husband’s, and his keys were found in the pants pocket.

The first cargo ship passed through a newly opened deep-water channel in Baltimore after being stuck in the harbor since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed four weeks ago. A bulk carrier sailing under a Panama flag passed through the new 35-foot channel Thursday morning, headed for St. John, Canada. The ship is one of five stranded vessels expected to pass through the new, temporary channel. A container ship named Dali struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge last month, causing the bridge to collapse. The port’s main channel is set to reopen next month after the Dali has been moved.

New York’s highest court has overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction and ordered a new trial. The Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that the judge at the disgraced movie mogul’s landmark #MeToo trial prejudiced him with improper rulings, including by letting women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case. The 72-year-old Weinstein is serving a 23-year sentence in New York. He’ll remain imprisoned because a 2022 conviction in a Los Angeles rape case resulted in a 16-year prison term. Weinstein's lawyer called the reversal a "tremendous victory." A dissenting judge called it part of a "disturbing trend" of reversals in cases involving sexual violence.

Authorities investigating New York's Gilgo Beach killings have launched a sprawling search of a wooded area on Long Island. A law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss details of the investigation told The Associated Press about the search area on condition of anonymity. The case has fueled national speculation after years of dead ends. Months ago, prosecutors charged a New York architect with murder in the death of four of the 11 women whose remains were found buried along a remote beach highway in 2010 and 2011. The law enforcement official said dozens of canine units and officers started searching the wooded area Tuesday.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan says new rules that would force power plants fueled by coal or natural gas to capture smokestack emissions or shut down are targeting pollution that's “pushing our planet to the brink.” The new limits unveiled Thursday on greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-powered electric plants are the Biden administration’s most ambitious effort yet to roll back planet-warming pollution from the power sector. The rules are a key part of President Joe Biden’s pledge to eliminate carbon pollution from the electricity sector by 2035 and economy-wide by 2050. The National Mining Association claims the EPA is "dismantling the reliability of the U.S. electric grid.″

A memorial at the National Cathedral in Washington is honoring seven World Central Kitchen aid workers killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza this month. Celebrity chef José Andrés, who is behind the World Central Kitchen relief group, is expected to speak at the service Thursday. Douglas Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, is among the Biden administration figures attending. Israeli drone strikes killed the seven during an aid mission in Gaza on April 1. The killings heightened international pressure on the Israeli military to change treatment of aid workers and Palestinian civilians in Gaza during the war with Hamas.

A reluctant Donald Trump is back in a New York City courtroom as his hush money trial resumes in New York with testimony from a longtime tabloid publisher. New York Judge Juan Merchan is also weighing whether to hold Trump in contempt and fine him for what prosecutors say were 10 different violations of a gag order that barred the GOP leader from making public statements about witnesses, jurors and others connected to the case. Prosecutors on Thursday brought up fresh examples of where they believe Trump violated the order.

The nation’s economy slowed sharply last quarter to a 1.6% annual pace in the face of high interest rates, but consumers — the main driver of economic growth — kept spending at a solid pace. The gross domestic product — the economy’s total output of goods and services — decelerated from its brisk 3.4% growth rate in the final three months of 2023. A surge in imports, which are subtracted from GDP, reduced first-quarter growth by nearly 1 percentage point. Growth was also held back by businesses reducing their inventories. Both those categories tend to fluctuate sharply from quarter to quarter. By contrast, the core components of the economy still appear sturdy.
