A 4.0 magnitude earthquake just east of Wildomar in southwest Riverside County rumbled through parts of Southern California on Tuesday, the seismology lab at Cal Tech confirmed.
A preliminary report pushed the magnitude up from 3.9. The quake was centered about one mile east-southeast of Wildomar and four miles northwest of Murrieta, according to the Earthquake Data Center.
The center said the quake was 8.5 miles beneath the earth’s surface.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the 1:21 p.m. quake that was widely felt throughout the area.
California Highway Patrol units in western Riverside County were urged by radio to check freeway overpasses.
