Willowbrook’s Village Board will get a new member. Terrence Kelly, who has served on the board since 2008, stepped down Monday, as he is moving out of state.

“Trustee Kelly was one of the guys who really took this seriously. He did the research, he did the homework,” Willowbrook Mayor Frank Trilla said.

“Before I decided to run for mayor, I reached out to Trustee Kelly and asked for his blessing,” Trilla said at Monday’s Village Board meeting. “I learned a lot from him in my early years.”

Kelly would listen to the other village board members and would be the last one to speak when the board was discussing an issue, Trilla said. So he followed his example and would wait until after Kelly spoke, Trilla said, so he would know what to say.

“He was a wise guy,” Trilla said.

Kelly’s term was due to end in April. The mayor has the authority to choose a resident to fill his seat on the board until April, with the board’s consent. Trilla said he likely will appoint someone who is serving on the village plan commission, because the members are familiar with the village code and issues.
