2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic leaderboard breakdown, takeaways: Matthew Wolff leads after Round 3

For most of Saturday's third round it looked as if we were going to get a jam-packed leaderboard going into the final round of the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday. When the leaders teed off early in the afternoon there were around 50 players within four strokes of the lead. All of that was wiped away over the next few hours, though, as Matthew Wolff emerged from the peloton with a 8-under 64 to take a 3-stroke lead going into Round 4.

Wolff's card was a bit of a roller coaster in Round 3 (which is always fun to watch) so let's dive a little deeper on his performance and what happened on Saturday as we look ahead to the finish of the fourth PGA Tour event back amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Matthew Wolff (-19) -- Quite a show from Wolff on Saturday with an 8-under 64 that included nine birdies and an eagle. He took a page out of the Jordan Spieth scorecard playbook in Round 3 and is now poised for his second win (which would also, amazingly, be his second top 10). Nobody has ever questioned the talent, which is immense. The bigger question is about consistency throughout four rounds or four weeks or four months. When he's in a groove, though, it's very easy to see why he's been so hyped as a future superstar. And he's in a groove this week. He says it's because he's shut his mind off and has been more carefree about the result (which is where he needs to live). Regardless of how it goes, he'll be entertaining on Sunday.

T2. Ryan Armour (-16) -- Quite a final two holes for Armour who finished 7-3 for a 5-under 67. He's second from tee to green so far this week, which is an encouraging trend, but I do wonder if there's enough firepower there to run down Wolff and to hold off Webb Simpson and Bryson DeChambeau on Sunday. Armour is a good PGA Tour player who has won just one time in his career (the Sanderson Farms three years ago). If he wins on Sunday, he'll earn more at this tournament than all but one of the PGA Tour seasons in his career.

T2. Bryson DeChambeau (-16) -- Bryson somehow keeps getting better with his driver and worse with his irons. Only five golfers are gaining at least a stroke on the field with driver this week, and Bryson is nearly gaining two. On the flip side, he's 59th in strokes gained on approach shots and last in proximity to the hole. It seems like these numbers are impossible, but they're real and they're probably going to keep him from winning for the first time since the end of 2018.

T4. Seamus Power, Mark Hubbard, Troy Merritt, Chris Kirk (-14)

T8. Webb Simpson (-13) -- I still kind of like Simpson to contend on Sunday (he's a fun 25-1 play to win, too). That sounds crazy, but he's been so clean and leads the field in strokes gained from tee to green. In the same way he surged at the end of the RBC Heritage with a barrage of birdies, it feels like he's saved up a few for the end of this event as well. His putting thus far has been below average, especially for him, and that's not going to last forever. If I'm Matthew Wolff, Bryson is the player I'm most concerned about behind me, but I also have one eye on Webb.

T8. Wesley Bryan, Luke List, Viktor Hovland, Matt Wallace (-13) -- This is probably the bottom of who could win this tournament barring somebody deeper shooting a 59 or something silly. Hovland has one bogey on the week and has been absolutely pummeling the golf ball. Unfortunately for him, his putter has run cold and he's losing strokes to the field on the greens. If he finds something hot at all on Sunday, he could have a 63 or 64 in him for the win.

Wow, double from Ryan Armour, and Matthew Wolff now leads by three strokes.
