BIG FUN ON THE BAYOU

Downtown Jeaux's offers great coffee, OK breakfast

Sometimes, Big Fun on the Bayou comes at a cost.

On the morning after the night before you reluctantly climb out of bed in a vague approximation of consciousness, eventually discovering that your body is craving a big breakfast and a bigger dose of caffeine.

Knowing that Downtown Jeaux's, a New Orleans-style coffee shop in downtown Houma, serves both, you arrive there, distantly wondering if sleep-driving is a real thing.

On a recent such visit, I ordered the Jeaux's Egg and Meat Platter, which consisted of two eggs and your choice of breakfast meat and breads. I chose the sausage patties and English muffin.

I also ordered a large dark-chocolate mocha with an extra shot of espresso — for medicinal purposes only.

First of all, the coffee hit the spot, as Uber-caffeinated beverages will do in this situation. The jolt woke me up enough to see and remember my breakfast.

The platter was exactly as advertised, but only just. The eggs were cooked separately but adequately over-easy, the two small sausage patties were cooked through but not burnt, which is about the only two ways one can mess up sausage patties, and the muffin was, well, toasted.

I got the impression that a full breakfast is somewhat out of Downtown Jeaux's comfort zone. It was not the big breakfast I craved, but it was OK and certainly not the best reason to go there.

No, that would be the coffee, which performed its enormous task of bringing me back to life superbly. They use Community Coffee, which seems to have a virtual monopoly on caffeine in these parts, but put it through its paces in an espresso machine, in which it rose to new heights.

Or maybe that was just me rising to the somewhat less lofty heights of the barely functioning.

Either way, the coffee did its job and earned Downtown Jeaux's my own silent kudos for reviving me enough to write this and get on with my day.

Downtown Jeaux's is at 300 Church St. in Houma.
