Ready Set Go! Back to School returns; where to donate supplies

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Organizers are gearing up for the annual Ready Set Go! Back to School (RSGBTS) giveaway.

Now in its 13th year, the event provides thousands of students with essential school supplies, setting them up for success in the classroom.

“Your pencils, pens, paper, composition books, notebooks, highlighters, index cards, we are going to put together about 5,000 bags of school supplies. That’s what we’ve been doing for the past 13 years, and this year will be no different,” said Tanya Scott-Pilcher, Co-Chair of RSGBTS.

The Pack the Trunk giveaway is set for Saturday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Garden City Recreation Center (160 Priscilla Thomas Way). Attendees are asked to open their trunks and go through the drive-thru so volunteers can safely distribute school supplies.

“We know that parents are probably still struggling through this pandemic because some were unemployed, some ended up not being able to make ends meet,” said Scott-Pilcher.

“Parents also became homeschool moms and dads too, and so, we want to be able to help our community this year like we’ve done in the past several years,” she added. “Just being there for the parent, making sure that the children have what they need to succeed.”

Feed the Hungry will also be on-site giving away boxed food and produce to families.

To serve upwards of 5,000 students, Ready Set Go! Back to School is asking for the community’s help.
