ORLAND PARK IL — A rabid bat was found in Orland Park, according to police, who said the bat was captured at the 15200 block of Windsor.

Police say the bat was taken in for testing and was later determined to be rabid by the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory. Police warn to keep dogs, cats and ferrets on a leash when outside their homes. If residents have not taken their pets to receive a rabies shot, police say to do so immediately.

If you were exposed or bitten by a bat, police say to contact your doctor. Police said residents should not handle any bats, skunks or other wild animals. If any bats or skunks are found dead or down on your property or roads, call the Cook County Department of Animal Control.
