Hastings College bats fizzle in loss to Kansas Wesleyan
Hastings College baseball loses to Kansas Wesleyan, 5-3
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College baseball team got off to a quick start only to see Kansas Wesleyan comeback to defeat the Broncos 5-3 on a blustery evening on Duncan Field.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Race Traynor (SR/San Tan Valley, AZ) hit a single to left to keep the inning alive. He then advanced to second on a wild pick off throw from Tyler Triano. Next Tino Zach (SR/Elkhorn, NE) hit a ground ball to shortstop Dalton Bishop’s but his throw was wild allowing the inning to continue. Julio Sanchez (SR/Valencia, Venezuela) made the Coyotes pay with a single to right and then Kasey Ohnoutka (JR/Lincoln, NE) roped a double down the right field line to score Zach but Sanchez would get thrown out at the plate as HC held a 2-0 lead.
KWU answered right back in the second scoring three runs on three hits to take a 3-2 lead.
That scoreline held into the eighth when the Coyotes began to threaten chasing starter Trey Rezac (SO/Ogallala, NE) and then loaded the bases with no outs as Jackson Grote (SO/Shickley, NE) was hoping to get out of the jam with no damage. Grote then enduced a ground ball to first where Traynor fired home for the force out and Tyler Kissler (SO/La Salle, CO) fired it right back to Traynor for the double play as Hastings looked like they may avoid a major inning. After a hit by pitch loaded the bases again, Sisipako Vehikite hit a little roller down the first baseline. HC was hoping the ball would go foul and it never did as everyone was safe and KWU was now up 4-2. Kansas Wesleyan added one more on a walk to lead 5-2.
That lead held up into the ninth where the Broncos would make some noise. Keaton Hoeke (JR/Elkhorn, NE) started the inning with a bunt single and two batters later Camden Brichacek (JR/Lincoln, NE) singled to right putting runners on first and third with one out. A Triano wild pitch brought home Hoeke to make it 5-3 but the a strike out and a pop up ended the game.
Ohnoutka finished the night going 2-for-4 with a RBI while Brichacek went 2-for-5.
Hastings was able to out hit KWU 10-8 while the Coyotes also had six errors to just the one for Hastings.
Hastings falls to 6-19 (4-8) on the year and will be back in action Saturday April 10 as Morningside comes to town for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. at Duncan Field.
