Doris Buhl

Doris Castlen Buhl, 89, of Hixson, died on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at her home.

Born Sept. 18, 1925, in Grand Bay, Al., she was the daughter of the late Lettie Cora Hamilton, later a school teacher with an MA degree from University of Alabama, 1959 and Henry Clayton Castlen, a surveyor and road contractor from Macon. They married in Union, Alabama where she was teaching school in 1922.

Her father died when Doris Rose was 12, leaving her mother to raise five daughters alone.  As a single parent, her mother took up many jobs to support her family, eventually earning a teaching degree from Livingston State.  She taught in the Mobile County schools for over 30 years and in 1980 the Grand Bay Elementary School was renamed in her honor.

Doris married William Buhl, Jr. in 1946 (born 2/3/22- the youngest of eight - died 8/14/05), a second generation well driller, charter member of the Kentucky Water Well Association, and owner of one of the oldest drilling companies east of the Mississippi River.  Their early years of marriage were spent in Mobile until William Buhl was discharged from the USN.  They moved to his home in Williamsburg, Ky., and had one son, Dr. Henry Clayton Buhl, an orthodontist, in Chattanooga.

Doris Buhl's career was with Department of Commerce, Bureau of Census that spanned from 1959-1990, based in Charlotte. She was a regional supervisor at the time of retirement and supervised many employees over her long tenure and received many awards and accolades including overseeing the distribution of legislative seats for various States, based on population.  She received the Key to the City, Bowling Green, Ky. in the 1960 census.

She was a member of the Women's Bible Class, First Baptist Church, Williamsburg, Ky.

Doris moved to Hixson in 1995 and was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Garraway of Tampa and Lettie Clayton Cardy of Tullahoma.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Henry Clayton Buhl of Chattanooga; two sisters, Aurelia Paine of Grand Bay, Alabama and Evelyn C. Moore of Houston; and many nieces and nephews on both sides of her marriage.

She did not believe in embellishment and deemed it inflationary.  She stood for friendship and fairness, goodness to her neighbors, always strived for success, and kept hope alive throughout her life. She recognized the compassion that Life Care of Hixson gave her during her rehab, and for Hospice Avalon, for their attendance to the end.  She supported several causes, primary of which is the McKamey Animal Shelter, 4500 N. Access Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37415, which she would ask be considered in lieu of flowers.

Burial will be announced by Croley Funeral Home, Williamsburg, Ky.
