Fewer new COVID cases in Warren compared to Chautauqua County

There were only 14 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Warren County over the weekend.

The total number of the cases is up to 3,118, just short of 8 percent of the population.

Of those 2,423 are confirmed and 695 are probables.

The death toll remains at 112 for the county.

Warren County, like every other county in the state, has a high rate of transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There have been over 500 tests performed over the past seven days in the county and a large number of those are positive.

According to CDC, he county’s positivity rate is 24.86 (or about 105 positives out of 523 tests). That rate is down about 14 percent compared to the previous seven days.

According to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, “The percent positive is a critical measure because it gives us an indication how widespread infection is in the area where the testing is occurring – and whether levels of testing are keeping up with levels of disease transmission.”

“A high percent positive means that more testing should probably be done – and it suggests that it is not a good time to relax restrictions aimed at reducing coronavirus transmission,” according to Johns Hopkins. “Because a high percentage of positive tests suggests high coronavirus infection rates (due to high transmission in the community), a high percent positive can indicate it may be a good time to add restrictions to slow the spread of disease. The higher the percent positive is, the more concerning it is. As a rule of thumb, however, one threshold for the percent positive being ‘too high’ is 5%. For example, the World Health Organization recommended in May that the percent positive remain below 5% for at least two weeks before governments consider reopening.”

Over the weekend, the Chautauqua County Health Department in New York reported that since Thursday, there have been an additional 185 COVID-19 cases and four more deaths attributed to the virus in the county.
