Albany, N.Y. — Hospitalizations due to the coronavirus in New York fell 33 to 586 on Wednesday, reaching a new low since March 17.

Hospitalizations have fallen sharply since reaching a peak of more than 18,000 over multiple days in April.

A total of 142 people are in intensive care units with the virus, down 12, and 72 are intubated, down four. Both of those totals are also new lows since mid-March, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today during a conference call with reporters.

The state conducted another 73,546 tests for the virus on Wednesday. New York now has 414,370 confirmed cases of the virus, including 777 new cases.

The rate of positive tests was 1.06%, which is largely consistent with recent weeks.

A total of 13 people died in the state due to the virus on Wednesday, bringing the statewide death toll to 25,145.

Help for Utah

Cuomo said the state is sending health staff and supplies to Utah to help a large hospital system there. He has announced several efforts in recent weeks to help a number of states and cities dealing with spikes in the coronavirus.

Earlier this week, he detailed plans to send aid to St. Petersburg, Florida.

More violations

The State Liquor Authority and New York State Police are continuing efforts to crack down on bars and restaurants violating state reopening rules. Cuomo has been speaking about the issue for weeks now.

He said the authority issued another 41 violations on Wednesday. The violations were found mainly in New York City and on Long Island

Most of the state’s efforts have been focused on the New York City area, where Cuomo has said violations are more of a problem.
