CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Multiple crews responded to fire on the 2500 block of S. Sprigg St. on Friday, Jan. 25.

According to the Cape Girardeau Department, all units were called to a fire at the Buzzi Unicem alternative fuels facility around 8:10 p.m.

Crews found a semi-truck and trailer in the fuel unloading area with light smoking showing.

A small fire was coming from the top of the semi-trailer that contained waste oil.

The waste oils are used to power the plant replacing the need for the plant to run entirely on coal.

The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes using a foam operation.

The waste product and foam was then held in a containment area but did not pose any safety concerns.

Crews remained on scene while Buzzi Unicem personnel inspected the unloading equipment and the trailer.

They stayed on the property for another 45 minutes to monitor the trailer for further fires.

$50,000 of damages stemmed from the fire,

Cape Girardeau Fire Department was assisted by Jackson Fire Rescue, Scott City Fire Department, East County Fire Protection District and Gordonville Fire Protection District.
