UTSA Day at the Capitol

UTSA Day Group at Texas State Capitol

UTSA was well represented at UTSA Day at the Capitol as over 60 student leaders, faculty, staff and alumni met with state representatives and their staff members to discuss legislative issues that are important to UTSA. Some of the issues discussed were Tuition Revenue Bonds, the Texas Research Incentive Program, the Texas Grants program, and the Hazelwood Act.

In addition to getting to meet with representatives and staffers, the UTSA delegation was able to meet with UTSA McClendon Scholars and several alumni who work at the Capitol. All were happy to see friendly, familiar faces from UTSA and we are very honored to have them working at the Texas State Capitol!

Dell’s University Professionals and Career Services Day

Dell office building

UTSA branches out to new opportunities for the student population. Recently the Career Center Staff was invited to participate in Dell’s University Professionals and Career Services Day at their Round Rock location. The purpose of the day was for attendees to build relationships with Dell and specific business leaders and talent acquisition professionals to better assist them and us in equipping graduating students to become tomorrow’s leaders at Dell. Dell business leaders shared the vision of Dell, as well as a team member alumni panel discussed career path opportunities at Dell. A site tour was conducted that included their Global Command Center.

As a result of the visit, Dell’s Talent Acquisition Staff attended our STEM and All Majors career fairs (see below). After attending our career fair, Dell’s Senior Project Program Management Analyst said it best “We cannot thank you enough for inviting us to your career fair yesterday! We were overwhelmed with your hospitality, as well as the amount and quality of your interested students. We look forward to many years of this partnership with you, and again, our sincerest thanks to all of you and your staff for such a great experience.”

Spring 2015 STEM & All-Majors Career Fairs

STEM   All-Majors Career Fair Crowd

On February 11th, over 800 UTSA students attended and participated in the Spring 2015 STEM and All-Majors Career Fairs conducted by the University Career Center. Seventy-one employers attended the morning STEM Career Fair and 97 employer organizations participated in the afternoon All-Majors Career & Internship Career Fair. Both events were held in the HUC Ballroom.

New from the University Career Center this semester was “Preparation Station”. After checking in, students were given the option of visiting three Career Fair preparation tables prior to going into the Career Fair. At these tables, Career Center professionals coached students on how to present and conduct themselves during the event, with a focus on:

  • Resumes
  • Employer research and knowledge
  • Dress, appearance and greeting
  • Elevator speech

The vast majority of students at both events visited Preparation Station before moving into the Career Fair, and feedback from students and employers was extremely positive.

Also new and detailed in the next article was the rollout of the new “Career Fair Mobile app” which was very well received by students and also helped with Career Fair preparation.

Career Center Attends Sanderson Farm Super Chicken Roadshow

UTSA Career Center Staff attended the Sanderson Farm Super Chicken Roadshow in Bryan/College Station. Sanderson Farms is the third largest producer of poultry in the United States, and is expanding operations in Texas.

They are looking for students and graduates to fill their Advanced and Beginning Trainee Program, as well as their Summer Internship Program. Career Center staff traveled to Sanderson Farms to understand their needs and build recruiting relationships.

If you’re scratching your head wondering, just what is a Super Chicken Road Show, it’s the opportunity to find out firsthand what goes into making Sanderson Farms one of the most successful companies in producing chickens for major grocery stores, restaurants and specialty stores. We enjoyed our visit and hope it will be a productive relationship for UTSA.
