With Shelter Full, Humane Society Of Harford County Waives Fees

The Humane Society of Harford County has waived dog adoption fees to make room at the shelter. Cat adoption fees are also waived in July.

FALLSTON, MD — With the shelter at capacity, the Humane Society of Harford County is giving those who have been thinking about adopting a dog a reason to do it now. Adoption fees are waived for dogs until further notice.

There is only one dog kennel out of 44 that is vacant in the adoption area, staff reported on Tuesday, July 23.

"Our stray kennels and kennels in our veterinary department are all full as well," Erin Long, marketing coordinator for the Humane Society of Harford County, said Tuesday afternoon.

As more animals are being brought in by Harford County Animal Control and owners, the shelter needs to make room.

"If you’ve been thinking of adding a furry friend to your family, now is the time," Executive Director of the Humane Society of Harford County Jen Swanson said in a statement. "We’re also extending an open invitation to all area rescue groups to visit and take animals into their programs."

Adoption fees are waived but regular adoption procedures will still be in place. Here's the application to adopt a dog.

Families who have a dog or dogs should be prepared to bring their pet(s) for a meet and greet if adopting a new dog.

During the month of July, cat adoption fees are also waived as part of the Maryland 2,000 event, in which 21 shelters across the state aim to find homes for at least 2,000 cats this month. See cats up for adoption at the shelter.

Staff strongly encourages everyone to microchip their pets so that if any come in as strays, the shelter personnel can scan them, find the microchip number and contact the owners to ensure their pets are at the shelter for as short a time as possible.
