No MPD officers to be charged in shootout; murder charges added for teen suspect

A 17-year-old is dead following a shooting Monday night. 

Memphis police reported the homicide, which occurred in the 1500 block of Galloway in the Evergreen neighborhood, Tuesday morning. The shooting took place around 11 p.m. Monday night; the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second shooting victim was taken to a hospital in non-critical condition. Preliminary information provided by police said the victim and the shooter likely knew one another. 

Homicides of children and teenagers under 18 have reached record levels in Memphis in 2020. The homicide of the teenager, whose identity has not been released, is one of more than 30 homicides in 2020 where the victim was under 18.

Days prior to the shooting, community leaders, anti-gun violence advocates, and law enforcement officials led the two-mile "Unity Walk" around the medical district, with the aim to raise awareness about the the record-shattering year of gun violence in Memphis.
