WASHINGTON — In a White House task force briefing Monday, Vice President Mike Pence said the number of New Jersey residents that have died from coronavirus has surpassed those from New Jersey that died on 9/11.
New Jersey announced another 200 deaths from the coronavirus on Saturday, with Gov. Phil Murphy saying the state has now lost nearly 100 more residents than it did in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Murphy said the new numbers were “particularly sobering.”
He paused for a moment of silence, saying the virus victims must never be forgotten. On Friday, Murphy ordered flags across the state to half-staff indefinitely to commemorate people who died from COVID-19.
“This is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment, our 9/11 moment, only it’s not going to be localized, it’s going to be happening all over the country and I want America to understand that,” Surgeon General Jerome Adams said on “Fox News Sunday.”
On Monday, Murphy said the number of positive coronavirus cases in New Jersey rose to 41,090, with the death toll reaching 1,003.
