Alabama added more than 1,100 coronavirus cases in the last day even as hospitalization rates dropped to the lowest since early July.

The Alabama Department of Public Health’s Aug. 30 10 a.m. numbers show 116,456 cases in the state, an increase of 1,172. The state added 1,561 cases yesterday with almost 1,300 of them backlogged cases from a newly added lab. It is unclear if some of the backlogged numbers are rolling over into today though several counties are reporting higher-than-usual numbers.

The state added 8 deaths overnight for a total of 2,067. To date, the state has tested 972,283 people for coronavirus, including 193,813 in the last 14 days. Of those recent tests, 12,900 were positive.

The state has also seen a drop in the number of patients hospitalized with the virus. As of Aug. 29, there were 986 patients hospitalized in the state with COVID-19, the lowest number since July 5. The highest number of COVID hospitalizations in the state – 1,613 - was on Aug. 6.
