1 dead, 1 hurt in New Bedford shooting; suspect in custody

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — One person died and another was injured in double shooting in New Bedford on Friday, authorities said.

Police also arrested an 18-year-old man who opened fire on officers before he was apprehended, according to a statement from the office of Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn III. No officers were injured and they did not return fire.

Police responding to 911 calls at about 10:30 a.m. found the first victim, identified as Angel Cruz, 40. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A second victim got into a car and was driving to the hospital when he crashed, according to the statement. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital before being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital. His name was not released.

About 45 minutes later, officers spotted a man who matched the description of the shooter. When officers approached him, he began firing a handgun at them. After firing all the bullets in the gun, he was taken into custody.

He was identified as Jon Zell, 18, of Mattapoisett.

Zell faces multiple counts of armed assault with intent to murder and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday. The investigation is ongoing and he could face additional charges, the district attorney said.

It could not be determined if he has an attorney.
