SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health reported 7,388 new COVID-19 cases, as well as 19 additional deaths on Thursday.
The average case count over the past week was about 1,055 per day, an increase over the previous week's average of 968 cases per day.
Other metrics also showed rises on Thursday. Virus levels were increasing or elevated at 82.4% of the state's wastewater testing sites, which health officials are using to gauge the true coronavirus situation as far fewer people have gotten tested for the disease this year. The previous week, 47.1% of sites were seeing increased or elevated levels.
The percentage of people who visited emergency rooms and had COVID-19 also increased to 5.2% of visits this week from 4.61% the previous week.
But hospitalization numbers remained consistent. On Thursday, 216 patients were hospitalized with the coronavirus, just one more than the previous Thursday, June 23.
Utah saw a higher-than-average number of patients receiving COVID-19 vaccine doses, as 4,511 got the shot. Last week, vaccines for the first time became available for infants and preschoolers. But the state has not yet released data for children under age 5 who have received the vaccine.
To date, Utah has confirmed 982,895 COVID-19 cases and 4,834 deaths due to the disease. Many of the deaths confirmed during June occurred in previous months, state data shows.
One previously reported death was removed from the state's total on Thursday after further investigation.
The deaths reported this week included:
- A Cache County woman between the ages of 65 and 84.
- A Davis County man, 65-84.
- A Davis County woman, older than 85.
- A Salt Lake County man, 65-84.
- A Salt Lake County man, older than 85,.
- A Salt Lake County woman, 45-64.
- A Salt Lake County woman, older than 85.
- A Tooele County man, older than 85.
- A Uintah County man, 25-44.
- Three Utah County women, 65-84.
- A Wasatch County man, 65-84.
- A Weber County man, 65-84.
- A Weber County man, older than 85.
- Four Weber County women, older than 84.
Correction: A previous version said there were 18 additional deaths confirmed this week. The correct number is 19, and one previously reported death was removed from the state's total after further investigation.
