Lyon County sets preliminary levy increase of 1.7%

MARSHALL — The Lyon County Board set a preliminary levy for 2022 this week as part of its annual budget process.

County commissioners voted to set the preliminary levy at a 1.7% increase, or about $264,000 more than the 2021 net levy.

The county has until the end of the year to adopt a final budget and levy. The final levy can be lower than the preliminary levy, but not higher.

The county will be holding a public “truth in taxation” hearing before adopting a final levy.

During Tuesday’s county board meeting, Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg said the proposed levy increase hadn’t changed from previous discussion of the 2022 budget and levy. With the 1.7% increase, the proposed county budget included a total net levy of about $15.51 million. In comparison, the 2021 net levy was about $15.24 million.

While the county’s net levy has been going up since 2014, the amount of the increases has been less than 3% for each of the past five years. Before 2014, the county went a few years without increasing its levy.
