The Rookie Season 2 Episode 3 Review: The Bet

It was a blast from the not so distant past on The Rookie Season 2 Episode 3 as two of Nathan Fillion's former costars from Castle made guest appearances.
As much as I enjoyed seeing both Seamus Dever and Jon Huertas on my screen, the show missed a brilliant opportunity.
Why were they given separate storylines?
Detectives Kevin Ryan and Javier Esposito had such great chemistry on Castle where they played partners for nine seasons.
The Rookie Season 2 Episode 2 Review: The Night General
These two deserved to be paired up once again whether it was as law enforcement officers or even better, as partners in crime.
Granted, they both did an excellent job in their respective roles but it could have been so much more entertaining if they had been working together.
That said, Seamus Dever played arrogant and sleazy better than I ever expected as the right hand to the city councilwoman. Between the shiny, new Tesla and the gleam in those gorgeous blue eyes, you knew this guy frequently gets what he wants.
But his appearance was much too brief and left me wanting more.
Jon Huertas had a bit more air time as Alejandro, the undercover DHS agent, even if a good portion of it was spent unconscious or on his back in a hospital bed.
What frustrated me most was that so much of Alejandro's story was left without answers. Where had he been for the six weeks he'd been missing and how did things go so horribly wrong that he had to jump off an overpass?
The sole purpose of Alejandro's story seemed to be to drag Jessica to the hospital where she could interact with both Nolan and Grace.
Grace was taken aback by Jessica's intensity. Jessica had such tunnel vision when it came to her case that she didn't even seem to think that forcing Alejandro to speak to her before he got medical attention could kill him.

Either that or she just didn't care. It's a little difficult to tell with Jessica. As Grace said, she's very intense.
What was clear was her intention when she pointed out that Nolan hadn't made room for a shoe rack in his master closet, even though she'd tried to cover by saying her comment meant nothing.
I was married for 20 years. Nothing usually means a whole lot of something.
Nolan
Jessica and Nolan are at two different stages in their relationship. He's just enjoying dating Jessica and spending time with her while she's become focused on where this relationship is headed.
Do these two have a future?
They certainly have very different personalities. Jessica is hyper-focused when she's on the job and she seems to view her investigations from the perspective of wins and losses.
Nolan takes the job seriously but he's more invested in the people connected to the investigations than his personal success.
And then there's Grace.
Much as I suspected, Grace isn't as married as Nolan assumed. She's been separated from her husband for a year, so her personal life is in limbo.
As Nolan and his ex-wife had decided to divorce two years before Henry went off to college, he knows a bit of what Grace is going through.

It's pretty clear that Nolan's friendship with Grace will be complicating his love life sooner rather than later.
Elsewhere in the squad, Sgt. Grey had his officers targeting problem spots in their areas.
Grey: Is there a problem, Smitty?
Smitty: Oh no, sir. I just love playing Whack-a-mole.
Grey: It’s true. Knockdown a problem spot it can pop back up anywhere but that’s the job, right? And since you’re so excited about doing it, I think you should share your excitement with Officer West out there today.
Smitty: Seriously?
West: Seriously?
Grey: Yeah, seriously.
Partnering West with Smitty works because it's teaching West to define the kind of cop he wants to be.
It would have been easy to revise his statement and say he'd seen Gleason with that gun, but he hadn't and Jackson is smart enough to know what a slippery slope that is.

What happens when you make up evidence because you think you've got the story right but you're wrong and the wrong person gets put away?
While West was riding with Smitty, Lopez was partnered with Nolan and they found both of their personal lives had them struggling to figure out what their romantic partners were thinking.
Angela took the news that Wesley's family was quite wealthy in stride. She kept an open mind, got along wonderfully with his mother, and managed to give Wesley a new perspective all while keeping her sense of humor, especially in this The Rookie quote...
Angela: Only a rich person would think turning down money is a noble idea. I wore my brother’s hand-me-downs until I was 15. My mom worked two jobs and so did we once we reached high school.
Wesley: So, you think less of me?
Angela: Are you kidding? Your mom and I already started planning the wedding. California is a no fault divorce state so if you ever felt like doing me a solid…
As far as Angela was concerned, he could use his trust fund to feed the homeless or buy her a Porsche, but what she really wanted was for him to have a better relationship with his mom, which was sweet.
And in an odd twist, Lucy set Tim up on a date.
I don't know what spurs Chen to play matchmaker, other than West pointing out that she likes to see people happy, but it took guts to even broach the subject with Bradford.
Lucy was so optimistic she even looked at the bright side of possibly losing the bet; she's have killer upper arms if she had to do 50 push-ups after every call.
When Lucy turned up at Rachel's the next morning, it was no surprise when Tim stepped out of the shower.
But as happy as I am that Lucy gets to wear short-sleeves, I wonder if we'll see Rachel again. She and Bradford may have had some sexual chemistry but they seem to be very different people and I don't necessarily see them as a long term couple.

Which was more of a shock, Wesley's wealth, his mom, or Angela's reaction to both?
