Gov. John Bel Edwards held a news conference Friday to address the spread of the delta variant in Louisiana.
Edwards announced that Louisiana now has the highest number of COVID-19 cases per capita in the US.
This comes after Louisiana saw its third-highest case count day since the start of the pandemic.
On Wednesday, the Louisiana Department of Health reported more than 5,000 new coronavirus cases.
The state also saw a spike in hospitalizations, the highest since February.
Gov. John Bel Edwards said Wednesday's case count is the third-highest day of new cases since the pandemic began.
Edwards said the new case count numbers are avoidable, and urged residents to get their coronavirus vaccines.
As a result of the spike in cases, the Louisiana Department of Health has issued new COVID-19 guidance.
“We are ordering 10 percent of the vaccines available to us and yet we have the highest growth rate of cases in the country. That has to change and it has to change now,” Edwards said.
Edwards added that 40% of Louisiana residents have received at least one shot of the vaccine, which he says is "nowhere near where we need to be."
Dr. Joseph Kanter spoke on the statistics of people who contracted the virus, saying 93% of COVID-19 cases reported over last week, 90% of people currently in hospital with COVID, 91% of COVID deaths over last week are among people who are not fully vaccinated.
Kanter added, "We’ve effectively lost six months of progress over the last two or three weeks."
