NY has highest daily number of new coronavirus cases since late May

Syracuse, N.Y. -- New York confirmed 1,731 new coronavirus cases from Friday’s test results, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

It’s been more than four months since New York’s new caseloads were that high. On May 27, 1,768 tests came back positive.

Back then, though, the state wasn’t testing nearly as many people. Friday’s test returns broke yet another record. The state got results from a total of 134,267 tests, the highest return in a single day, Cuomo said.

About a quarter of the Friday’s new cases were discovered in four counties: Kings, Queens, Rockland and Orange counties, according to Cuomo’s office.

In those four places, 8,676 test results found 450 cases. That’s a positive rate of 5.2%.

The rest of the state has a much lower positive rate, based on Friday’s test results. The remainder of the state got results from 125,591 tests. Of those, 1,281 people tested positive, or 1.01%.

“This pandemic is not over," Cuomo said in a statement. “We continue to closely monitor the data throughout the state, push our testing capacity to new highs and keep an especially close eye on the ZIP codes in hot spot areas, which represented 26 percent of yesterday’s cases despite being home to 6.7 (percent) of the population.”

Central New York is in better shape, according to the recent data.

Here, test results showed a 0.8% positive rate on Friday. The seven-day average is also 0.8%, according to state data.

Overall, New York has confirmed 463,360 cases since March.

On Friday, another six people died, according to Cuomo. The state’s total death count is at 25,505.
