CASS COUNTY, MI -- A 36-year-old Battle Creek man was injured when he crashed his vehicle into trees about 12 miles north of the Michigan-Indiana border.

Police said the driver crawled to the road and was spotted by a passerby, who called for help and assisted the driver until deputies arrived.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the area of Pokagon Highway and Oak Grove Road in LaGrange Township of Cass County.

Investigators said it wasn’t immediately clear what led to the driver’s vehicle leaving the roadway and striking three trees. The vehicle ended up in a field off the roadway and couldn’t be seen by passerby, police said.

The driver wore his seat belt, and the vehicle’s airbags did deploy, according to police. He was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment of his injuries.

Cass County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, as did personnel from Life Care EMS and the Cassopolis Fire Department. The incident remains under investigation.
